Stopped in the turning lane at a light, an elderly woman in the car next to me lowered her window and waved to get my attention. “Are you making a left?”

“No, I’m stopped.”

“I KNOW that. Seriously, will you be turning left?”

“Why?”

“Because I need to get in that lane.”

“Oh. I wasn’t but I will if you want me to.”

“No, you don’t have to but if you are can you move up?”

“Sure, but it’d be easier if I just commit to making a left. In fact, I can go wherever you want me to. I’m retired. I don’t have to be anywhere.”

She lowered the music in her car. She didn’t think she was beginning a conversation.
“No, I appreciate that I just need you to move up before the light changes.”

“Ok, sure but are there any other turns you’d like me to make after this light?”

“What? Of course not.”

“Look if it’ll make your trip easier I’ll drive ahead of you like you’re the President.”

“I’m no president believe me.”

“Would you consider getting into politics?”

“What? The arrow’s green we have to go!”
